The Farm

As I begin my next semester at school, and begin making more art, I notice a theme. You hear the saying "Write what you know" and I feel this is what I keep doing with my art - drawing on themes and places and processes that are familiar and intimate to me.  And guess what - there is just alot of Louisiana living inside of me.  It is, undeniably, what I am most authentically connected with.  The landscape, the farm, there is a mysterious and simple beauty in it, in its constancy, in its generosity. There is a lifetime of artwork to be made that draws from this landscape.

So this week on the farm they are cutting rice. Dad sent these pictures that made me all warm and nostalgic. Maybe you see the quiet grace of this environment... maybe you don't. That's OK. Matthew says it is an acquired taste. Regardless, this is where I am from.

And a couple of others from a couple of springs ago, because they are so close to me.
